Boba Baby Carrier

THE VERDICT

The Boba is a soft, buckle-style carrier that took us from Siena's first few months right through to toddler age, thanks to the different ways it can be worn. For travelling families it's the one bit of baby kit we'd recommend. Hands free through security, up stairs and over cobbles with none of the stroller fight, and comfy enough that she happily napped in it. Best for parents who want to travel light and go anywhere. Skip it if you specifically want a stroller your child can sit in independently, or you'll only ever be on flat, pram-friendly ground.

WHY IT WORKED FOR US

The carrier is the easiest "accessory" to use at the airport and babies are snug against mom (or dad!). Hands free through check-in, through security, up and down stairs, onto transfers, all while Siena stayed close and calm. We've pushed a stroller through all of that too, and there's no contest. No folding it at the gate, no hauling it up steps, no wrestling it over cobbled streets or squeezing it through a narrow old-town doorway. You just walk. When they're under 2 and are on the lap, the Boba was my best friend.

What kept it in use for so long was the range of carry positions. We used it from a few months old, with the infant adaptor, right through to toddler age, facing in when she was small and wanted to sleep, facing out once she was curious about everything. On the back when she got bigger and we went on multiple family hikes.

She loved it so much we ended up wearing it at home, not just travelling. If she was fighting a nap at home, I'd pop her in the carrier and carry on with my chores.

THE WRAP WE TRIED FIRST

Before the buckle carrier we tried the wraps, the long stretchy fabric kind. Lovely in principle, and lovely if someone's there to help. On my own, though, I found the tying faff too much: laying it out, getting the tension right, doing it all again when it loosened. The buckle carrier solved exactly that. Clip in, adjust, go. If you're choosing between a wrap and a structured carrier and you'll often be solo, go with the Boba baby carrier.

GOOD TO KNOW

The worry everyone raises with carriers is heat, a sweaty baby stuck against you. We live in the Middle East and genuinely didn't find that a problem. The one exception was where Siena's head rested against bare skin, which did get warm. An easy fix: we tucked a muslin square where her head sat, and that was that.

WHO IS THE BOBA BABY CARRIER FOR

  • Get it if: you travel and want to move freely through airports, stairs, old towns and anywhere a stroller becomes a burden; you want one carrier that lasts from the early months into toddlerhood; you like the idea of a calm, close nap on the go.

  • Skip it if: you specifically want your child sitting in their own seat, you're only ever on flat pram-friendly ground, or you know you'll always have a second pair of hands and prefer a wrap.
