Is The Hike Good For Kids?

We've tried a lot of hiking as a family, and this was the first one where we didn't hear a single complaint until the VERY end "I'm hungry". No "are we done yet", no dragging feet, just Siena running ahead to the next station and mommy using it as a rest stop!

WHAT IS THE HASLACH FOREST ADVENTURE TRAIL?

The Haslach Forest Adventure Trail (Walderlebnispfad Haslach) is a 4.6 kilometre loop through the forest above Haslach im Kinzigtal, built specifically with children in mind. Eight play stations are dotted along the route, a climbing slope, a balance beam, a robber's den to hide in, and more, alongside over thirty information boards on the forest and the animals that live in it. It is the kind of trail that turns a walk into an outing.

What stood out for us was how quiet it was. We arrived at 10am on a Saturday, which in most places means queuing for the car park, and we didn't pass a single other family on the trail. It felt like we had the whole forest, and every play station, entirely to ourselves.

WHERE IS IT AND HOW TO GET THERE

The trail starts and ends at the Waldseeparkplatz in Haslach im Kinzigtal, in the Ortenau district of the Black Forest. It's an easy drive from Freiburg, Offenburg or Freudenstadt, all on the B294 or B33, and the parking lot itself marks the trailhead, so there's no separate walk in to find the start.

Worth knowing: the trail is signposted the whole way round, with an overview board a few steps from the car park, so you don't need to download anything or follow a map on your phone.

THE ROUTE, STEP BY STEP

We parked at the Waldseeparkplatz and picked up the trail straight from the car park, following the signs for the Walderlebnispfad. The first stretch winds gently uphill through the trees, and the first play station appears before you've had time to wonder if you're on the right path.

From there it's a steady rhythm of walk, climb, balance, repeat. The stations are spaced out just enough that the walking in between never drags, and close enough together that nobody has time to get bored. We reached the Willy-Kern-Hütte roughly halfway round and stopped there for a break (bring your own snacks, and clean up after). From the hut, the path loops back down through the forest, gently downhill the rest of the way, and spits you out close to where you started.

The loop finishes back near the Waldseeterrasse, where there's a playground, a mini golf course and a cafe to eat if you want to make a full afternoon of it rather than heading straight back to the car.

WHERE TO STAY NEARBY

We based ourselves at Ferienparadies Schwarzwälder Hof in Seelbach, about twenty five minutes from the family hike in black forest, Germany. It's a family setup, a wellness hotel, holiday apartments and camping all on one site, with a pool and sauna area along a river with an epic kids play. It made an easy, low-stress base for exploring this stretch of the Kinzigtal without needing to move around too much.

IS THE FAMILY HIKE IN GERMANY WORTH IT

Yes, it's free outdoor family fun for almost the whole family (age 3 and up). It's not a dramatic, bucket-list Black Forest moment, but it doesn't need to be. If you want an easy half day where the walking takes care of itself, this is it. If your child likes to climb, balance and hide, this trail will hold their attention the whole way round, no bribery required.

FAQ

Is the Haslach Forest Adventure Trail good for toddlers?

It's better suited to children who are walking confidently on their own, since it isn't stroller friendly and the play stations involve a fair bit of climbing and balancing. A toddler who's a strong, steady walker would likely still enjoy it, but it's not a carry-and-push kind of trail.

Do you need to book anything in advance?

No, the trail is free to walk and open access, with no booking required.

How long should you allow?

Around two to three hours for the full loop with stops at the play stations, longer if you linger at the Willy-Kern-Hütte or finish with mini golf.

Is it doable as a day trip from Freiburg or Offenburg?

Yes, both are within easy driving distance on the B294 or B33, making this a straightforward half day out from either base.

Any facilities on the way?

There's a rest stop partway round at the Willy-Kern-Hütte, and the Waldseeterrasse inn at the end has food, a playground and mini golf.

If you're planning a Black Forest trip with kids and want an enjoyable family hike through a forest, the Haslach Forest Adventure Trail is it.
