Sri Lanka holds a very special place in our hearts. We've been visiting for years, and have loved it so much we've actually invested in a property there with dreams of retiring there one day. So when we say we know the south coast well, we really mean it. This post is our intro guide to Southern Sri Lanka with kids. An honest overview of each area, where we've stayed, what we've eaten, and the experiences that have stayed with us. We've linked through to deeper area guides and accommodation reviews wherever you see the buttons, so you can dig into whatever's most relevant for your trip.

One thing we can say with certainty: this region is one of the most family-friendly coastlines we've ever travelled. The people are warm, children are welcomed everywhere, the food is brilliant, and the pace of life slows you right down in the best way.

Areas to Explore in Sri Lanka

Colombo

We wouldn't recommend Colombo as a sightseeing stop. It's a fairly underwhelming city if you're expecting wow factor. But we genuinely love it for the quirky cafes and incredible shopping. The Sri Lankan craft and clothing stores are stunning, and there are even kids' spaces tucked in so you can browse in peace.

Bentota

Known for its turtle sanctuaries, long stretches of beach, water sports, and a beautiful lagoon. We visited during the south coast monsoon season (August) and experienced rough seas and plenty of rain. But we had a beautiful hotel that kept us very happily occupied within its own grounds.

Galle

A historic city famous for its beautifully preserved Dutch Fort, cobblestone streets, and vibrant markets. Families will love wandering the fort's walls, spotting the old cannons, and watching the sun sink into the ocean from the lighthouse. It's one of those places that genuinely feels special — and the kids think it's a real castle.

Thalpe

A quieter beach town just south of Galle with a beautifully relaxed vibe. The calm waters make it ideal for children to swim safely, and the beach is far less crowded than anywhere else on the coast. This is our secret favourite stretch.

Unawatuna

One of the most popular beach destinations on the southern coast, and for good reason. The bay is sheltered, making it a safe and calm swimming spot for children. We personally love the narrow winding road through the village — crammed with great places to eat, drink, and pick up a few things.

Hikkaduwa

Famous for its vibrant coral reef and lively beach scene. Hikkaduwa offers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, and our daughter was absolutely mesmerised snorkelling with sea turtles right off the shore. It's the liveliest spot on the coast, with more of a backpacker and surfer energy — but very much still family-friendly.

Weligama

A laid-back fishing town known for its long sandy beach and gentle waves — perfect for beginner surfers and children learning to swim. The town has a lovely yoga-and-surf-school vibe with casual beach clubs, a big sandbank, and a very chilled energy.
